Description

The difference between an object placed on a surface and an object displayed on one is elevation.

The Alto is the elevated vessel , the same hand-carved green onyx tradition as the Verdant, raised on a solid pedestal base that lifts the form above the table plane and gives it the presence of something intended to be looked at from every angle. Where the Verdant sits close to the surface with quiet weight, the Alto commands the room from slightly above it.

Both are one of a kind. Both are carved from natural green onyx. The Alto simply rises.

Green Onyx — Olive, Amber, and Warm Brown

The Alto's green onyx is described by its full tonal range: olive, amber, and warm brown veining layered through a base of deep green stone. This is not a monochromatic piece. It is a study in warm mineral colour , the olive of deep forest shadow, the amber of late afternoon light through stone, the warm brown of earth at depth , all running through the same carved object simultaneously.

No two Alto vessels carry the same distribution of these tones. The veining pattern, the relative balance of olive to amber to brown, and the intensity of the green base colour are all determined by the specific section of stone from which each piece is carved. A miner's extraction, a carver's cut, and millions of years of geological deposition produce the result. Human craft sets the form; the stone supplies the colour.

The Pedestal Base — Architecture in Stone

Most decorative vessels sit directly on the surface. The Alto does not. Its solid pedestal base — carved from the same piece of onyx as the vessel above it , creates a two-level composition: the broad, stable footing of the pedestal at the bottom; the rounded, lidded body rising above; the pointed finial at the apex. Three levels of form in a single hand-carved object.

This vertical hierarchy is what gives the Alto its "architectural balance", the supplier's own language for a piece where the proportions are resolved across height, not just width. On a console or coffee table, the Alto introduces a vertical element that most stone objects cannot provide at this scale. It punctuates a styled surface rather than simply anchoring it.

The pedestal base also elevates the vessel high enough that the stone's translucency , a quality of green onyx that appears when light passes through thin sections , becomes visible at eye level when the Alto is placed on a low surface. The stone glows very subtly at its edges in natural or warm light. This is not an effect that can be reproduced in any other material.

The Lid and Finial — Form with Function

The Alto's fitted lid and pointed stone finial complete the upward movement of the composition. The finial , carved from the same stone as the vessel , rises to a clean point above the lid, providing the apex of the three-level form. Removed, the lid reveals the vessel interior; in place, it creates a closed, resolved silhouette that reads as a complete sculptural object.

The Alto can be used to hold small objects , rings, botanicals, pebbles, meaningful small items — or displayed empty as pure form. Both uses are valid. The stone makes no distinction.

Verdant and Alto — The Natural Stone Pairing

The Alto and the Verdant are designed to be understood as a family:

Verdant Alto
Form Low, rounded vessel Pedestal-elevated vessel
Presence Grounded, horizontal Architectural, vertical
Base Flat base Solid pedestal
Best For Anchoring a surface Commanding a surface
Stone Natural green onyx Natural green onyx
Lid Yes — sculpted finial Yes — sculpted finial
Unique Every piece one of a kind Every piece one of a kind

Styled together, the Verdant and Alto create a natural stone installation , two voices in the same material, different in register. One low, one elevated. One grounding the surface, the other lifting above it.

How to Style the Alto

As a solo statement: The Alto is strong enough to stand alone on a console, sideboard, or dining table. Its pedestal height and vertical finial make it visible from across a room in a way that lower objects cannot match.

With the Verdant: Place the Verdant and the Alto together on a coffee table or console. The height difference between the two creates a layered composition — one object anchors the surface, the other rises above it.

On a Decoronto sideboard: The Alto's green onyx works particularly well against the natural tones of the Calla Sideboard (white marble top), the Orb Sideboard (natural mango), and the Aura Sideboard (warm burl veneer).

Natural Stone Care

🪨 Onyx Care Note:

  • Wipe with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth — no abrasive cleaners
  • Avoid acidic liquids (citrus, wine, vinegar) — these can etch the stone surface
  • Avoid prolonged direct heat
  • Handle the lid and finial carefully — carved stone, not cast resin
  • Natural inclusions, minor texture variations, and colour shifts across the surface are characteristics of the stone, not defects

Features

  • Hand-Carved from Solid Natural Green Onyx — Olive, amber, and warm brown veining on a deep green base
  • Solid Pedestal Base — Architectural elevation carved from the same stone as the vessel
  • Fitted Lid with Pointed Stone Finial — Three-level vertical composition: pedestal, vessel, finial
  • Each Piece is One of a Kind — Natural stone variation means no two Alto vessels are identical

  • Dual Use — Display as sculpture or use to hold small decorative objects
  • Timeless Form — Pairs with modern, transitional, and classic Canadian interiors
