Description
Not every object needs to close.
The Vale Pedestal Bowl is the open piece in the Verdant Onyx collection , no lid, no finial, just the bowl itself rising from its solid pedestal base. Its gently rounded interior is exposed: a shallow, curved space carved from natural green onyx, available to hold whatever the surface calls for ,dried botanicals, smooth pebbles, a single stem, a few meaningful objects, or simply air and light.
The Vale's openness is its design. Where the Verdant and the Alto contain, the Vale receives.
Open Bowl — The Simplest Form
A bowl is one of the oldest human forms. Before the lidded vessel, before the jar, before the pot , there was the bowl. The Vale returns to that origin in a material that has been valued for thousands of years: natural stone, carved by hand, shaped into a form so resolved that nothing about it needs to change.
The gently rounded interior of the Vale is designed to catch the eye and hold it. Green onyx, when curved inward, creates a concentration of colour and veining at the centre of the bowl , the stone's natural variation pools visually in the lowest point, making the interior the most visually interesting part of the piece.
The open design also means the Vale is fully functional in a way the lidded pieces are not: it is genuinely easy to place and retrieve small items, to fill with seasonal botanicals, to arrange stones or shells or other natural objects. It invites interaction in a way a closed vessel does not.
The Pedestal Base — Lifted and Considered
The Vale's solid pedestal base elevates the bowl from the surface , the same architectural decision as the Alto, here serving a different purpose. Where the Alto uses the pedestal to create upward presence for a lidded vessel, the Vale uses it to reveal the interior of the open bowl from a natural viewing angle.
On a coffee table, the pedestal lifts the Vale's rim to a height where the bowl's interior is visible to someone seated , the stone's veining and the hollow of the bowl are both part of the visual experience, not just the exterior silhouette. Without the pedestal, a low bowl disappears into the surface. Elevated, it becomes a display piece with depth.
Soft Verdant Hues and Earth-Toned Veining
The Vale's green onyx is described by its palette: soft verdant hues , the quiet, muted greens of fern, lichen, and shaded stone , layered with rich earth-toned veining in warm brown and amber. This is not a loud, saturated green. It is a green that feels natural and settled ,the colour of the forest floor rather than the canopy , a tone that works in warm interiors without competing with them.
The earth-toned veining grounds the green: the warmer browns and ambers running through the stone ensure the Vale reads as warm rather than cool, natural rather than clinical, even in a space with contemporary or minimal design sensibility.
Part of the Verdant Onyx Collection
The Vale is the open piece in the three-part Verdant Onyx collection. All three are hand-carved from natural green onyx. Each has a distinct form and character:
| Verdant | Alto | Vale — Small | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lid | Yes | Yes | No — open bowl |
| Base | Flat | Pedestal | Pedestal |
| Form | Rounded lidded vessel | Elevated lidded vessel | Open pedestal bowl |
| Character | Contained, grounded | Architectural, elevated | Open, receptive |
| Use | Display / small storage | Display / small storage | Display / botanicals / objects |
| Stone | Green onyx | Green onyx | Green onyx |
Styled together, the three pieces form a natural stone installation — closed and open, lidded and bare, grounded and elevated.
How to Style the Vale
On a coffee table: Fill the Vale with a small arrangement of dried pampas grass, eucalyptus pods, or river stones. The pedestal height puts the arrangement at a comfortable viewing level from the sofa.
On a console: Use the Vale as the low element in a three-piece arrangement , a tall vase or lamp behind it, the Vale in front, establishing a layered depth of objects.
On a dining table: A Vale filled with seasonal botanicals or fruit makes an understated centrepiece that is elegant without demanding attention.
With the Alto and Verdant: Place all three together on a sideboard or console. Open, closed, elevated, grounded , the arrangement reads as a curated natural stone collection, not a set of matching objects.
With Decoronto furniture: The Vale's earth-toned greens work naturally on the marble top of the Calla Sideboard and alongside the warm natural tones of the mango wood collection.
Natural Stone Care
🪨 Onyx Care Note:
- Wipe with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth , no abrasive cleaners
- Avoid acidic liquids (citrus, wine, vinegar) , these can etch the stone
- No prolonged direct heat
- Natural inclusions, minor texture variations, and colour shifts across the surface are characteristics of the stone, not defects
- The open bowl interior is exposed stone , treat with the same care as the exterior
