Description
Some pieces rise above the surface. The Umbra stays with it.
A low-profile lidded vessel carved from solid black marble, the Umbra is defined by its grounded presence , close to the table, weighted, composed. Where the Nero bowls elevate on pedestal bases and the Cella and Cima rise on ivory onyx pedestals, the Umbra rests directly on the surface and belongs there completely.
Natural white veining runs through each piece , formed in the stone over millions of years, unique to every vessel. A removable lid in the same black marble closes the form. Polished smooth. One of a kind. Quiet luxury at its most minimal.
Low Profile — The Grounded Form
The Umbra's low-profile silhouette is a deliberate design position. Not every natural stone object should rise and command. Some should settle and anchor , providing weight and material presence at the base of a styled surface rather than above it.
On a coffee table, the Umbra anchors an arrangement from below while taller objects , a candle, a vase, an open bowl , rise around it. On a console, it provides the low, closed, composed element in a grouping that has movement and height from other pieces. On a shelf, it fills the space between books with something that is unmistakably itself: solid black marble with white veining and a lid.
The low form also means the Umbra's lid is the most visible part of the piece from above — and it is from above that a coffee table is most often seen. The lid's black marble surface, with its white veining, is a composition that looks as good looking down at it as looking across at it.
Removable Lid — Functional Precision
The Umbra's removable lid is explicitly called out as a feature , not because a lid is unusual in the collection, but because "removable" rather than "fitted" suggests the lid lifts cleanly and completely, making the vessel accessible for use.
With the lid on, the Umbra is a closed, resolved sculptural object. With the lid removed, it becomes an open vessel , available for small objects, jewellery, meaningful small items, or botanical display. The two states of the Umbra are both valid and both beautiful.
The lid is carved from the same piece of black marble as the vessel. The veining is continuous with the body. When in place, the lid and vessel read as one object.
Black Marble, White Veining — The Permanent Contrast
The Umbra's visual character is identical in principle to the Nero bowls but experienced differently in the low, lidded form. Natural white veining on solid black marble , the highest natural contrast available in a carved stone object. Polished to a smooth finish that deepens the black and sharpens the white.
At low scale, close to the surface, the Umbra's veining is examined rather than admired from a distance. The organic movement of the white mineral through the black stone , never geometric, never repeating, entirely determined by the geology of the specific piece of marble , rewards the close attention a coffee table or console invites.
No two Umbra vessels carry the same veining. The piece you receive is the only one of its exact pattern that exists.
How to Style the Umbra
On a coffee table: The Umbra low and closed at the centre or edge of a styled table. A candle to one side, a book to the other. The Umbra provides the dark, weighted anchor point.
With the Nero Small: Place the Nero Small (open pedestal bowl) and the Umbra (low lidded, flat base) together — open and closed, elevated and grounded, both in black marble with white veining.
With the Verdant: The Umbra and the Verdant are the black and green equivalents of the same lidded form — both low, both lidded, both without pedestal elevation. Styled together they create a two-stone, same-form pairing that is one of the strongest natural stone object groupings in the collection.
On a shelf: Between books or objects, the Umbra provides a closed, dark stone object that stops the eye without demanding it.
⚠️ Black Marble Care
🖤 Care Note:
- Avoid ALL acidic contact — citrus, vinegar, wine permanently etch polished black marble
- Wipe any liquid immediately with a dry soft cloth
- No abrasive cleaners — scratch the polished finish
- Polished black marble shows fingerprints , wipe regularly with dry microfibre cloth
- Handle lid carefully — carved stone; the lid rim is its most vulnerable point
- Natural veining and colour variation are characteristics of the stone, not defects
