Description
There is a quality in ivory onyx that no other stone quite matches: light enters it.
Hold the Aurelius Pedestal Bowl near a lamp, position it beside a window, place it on a dining table beneath a pendant , and the stone glows. Ivory onyx is semi-translucent. The polished surface allows light to penetrate the outer layers of the stone and scatter softly through the warm veining within. The result is not reflection , it is illumination from inside the material itself.
This is the centrepiece that makes a table feel warm after dark. Carved by hand from solid natural ivory onyx. Polished smooth. Open at the top, elevated on a pedestal base, and — like every piece of natural stone , formed once, existing once.
Ivory Onyx — The Stone That Glows
Ivory onyx is a variety of microcrystalline quartz that forms in underground cavities when silica-rich mineral water deposits extremely thin, parallel layers over thousands of years. The resulting stone has a banded, layered internal structure , and because the layers are microscopically thin, light can pass through sections of the stone where the layers are fine enough.
This translucency is the defining material quality of ivory onyx and the primary reason it has been prized in decorative art and architecture for centuries. In a polished bowl form , where the stone is at its thinnest near the rim and upper bowl wall , the Aurelius will genuinely glow when light touches it from the right angle.
The warm organic veining of ivory onyx , moving through cream, honey, amber, and warm taupe , creates a visual warmth that green onyx cannot match. Where green onyx reads as natural and earthy, ivory onyx reads as warm and luminous. It is the stone equivalent of warm candlelight.
No two Aurelius bowls share the same veining pattern. The distribution of cream to amber to taupe, and the direction and character of the veining lines, are entirely determined by the specific section of stone each bowl is carved from.
Shallow Open Form — Functional and Beautiful
The Aurelius's shallow, open form is a deliberate design choice that sets it apart from deeper vessel forms. A shallow bowl exposes more of the stone's interior to view ,the veining on the floor of the bowl is as visible as the veining on the exterior wall. The bowl's entire inner surface becomes part of the visual presentation.
The shallow form is also genuinely functional in a way that deeper vessels are not. The Aurelius can hold:
- Fruit — a small arrangement of citrus, figs, or pears in an ivory onyx bowl is one of the oldest and most effective table styling techniques
- Nuts — a functional bowl for a cocktail hour or dining table that also looks exceptional when empty
- Dried botanicals — eucalyptus pods, cotton stems, dried seed heads
- Decorative objects — smooth river stones, small succulents, votives, anything at all
Or nothing. Displayed empty, the Aurelius is sufficient — the stone is the content.
The Pedestal Base — Warmth, Elevated
The Aurelius's sculptural pedestal base lifts the bowl to a viewing height appropriate for dining tables and large coffee tables , surfaces where the piece will be seen from a seated position at distance. Without the pedestal, a shallow bowl disappears into the table surface. Elevated, the Aurelius presents its full profile: the gentle curve of the bowl wall, the transition to the pedestal, and the warm ivory stone at every level.
The pedestal also means the Aurelius functions as display even when filled , the base is visible beneath whatever is in the bowl, maintaining the stone's architectural presence even when the bowl is in use.
Verdant Onyx vs. Aurelius Ivory Onyx — Two Families, One Collection
The Aurelius is the first piece in the ivory onyx family , the warm, luminous counterpart to the green onyx Verdant family:
| Green Onyx Family | Ivory Onyx Family | |
|---|---|---|
| Pieces | Verdant, Alto, Vale Small, Vale Large | Aurelius |
| Stone | Natural green onyx | Natural ivory onyx |
| Palette | Deep green, olive, amber, earth brown | Cream, honey, amber, warm taupe |
| Quality | Earthy, grounded, organic | Luminous, warm, translucent |
| Character | Natural, verdant, forest-toned | Golden, glowing, timeless |
Both families are hand-carved from solid natural stone. Both are one of a kind. They complement each other on the same surface — the Aurelius's warm ivory beside a Vale's deep green creates a natural stone conversation in two tones.

How to Style the Aurelius
Dining table centrepiece: The Aurelius alone, with a small fruit arrangement , citrus, figs, or a single stem — is a complete centrepiece. The warm ivory stone reads well against linen, wood, marble, and ceramic tableware.
Coffee table: Position the Aurelius as the anchor object on a large coffee table. Its warm ivory tone works with virtually any upholstery and wood finish in the surrounding room.
Console or sideboard: Use the Aurelius as a single sculptural statement beside a lamp. The stone's translucency near a light source creates an intimate glow that changes the quality of the space.
With Decoronto furniture: The Aurelius's warm ivory tones pair especially well with the Calla Sideboard's white marble top , two warm stones in different tones on one surface. It also works beautifully on the natural mango wood of the Orb and Grove sideboards, where the ivory onyx provides a warm light tone against the darker wood.
Natural Stone Care — Polished Ivory Onyx
🪨 Care Note:
- Wipe with a soft microfibre cloth , dry or very slightly damp
- Avoid acidic liquids , citrus juice, vinegar, wine — these etch polished onyx. If using the bowl for fruit, line with a soft cloth or thin insert to prevent direct fruit contact with the stone
- No abrasive cleaners ,, these scratch the polished surface
- Avoid prolonged direct heat
- The polished surface will show fingerprints , wipe regularly with a dry microfibre cloth
- Natural inclusions, minor colour shifts, and veining variations are characteristics of the stone
