There is a moment in a well-styled interior where everything settles ,and then one object makes the room notice itself. The Apex is that object.
A pedestal lidded vessel carved from solid black marble, the Apex rises from its sculptural base through a softly rounded body to a pointed finial lid , a sequence of forms that is both classical and precise. Natural white veining moves through the polished black stone, unique to every piece. Elevated. Closed. Composed.
It stands alone on a sideboard and holds the room. Beside a lamp on a console it becomes the dark anchor in a warm arrangement. On a dining table it is the piece around which the table is set.
The Pointed Finial — Architecture in Stone
The Apex's pointed finial lid is the defining feature of the piece and the origin of its name. Where the Umbra (low, flat-base, removable lid) closes quietly and stays close to the surface, the Apex rises to a point , the finial pulling the eye upward, providing the piece with a vertical termination that is architectural in character.
This is a detail with history. Finials have appeared at the summit of spires, urns, furniture posts, and decorative objects across centuries of design , always serving the same purpose: to bring a form to a resolved, pointed conclusion. In the Apex, the finial is carved from the same solid black marble as the vessel body. Its veining continues from the body through the lid. The black deepens and the white veining sharpens at the pointed tip.
At the scale of a decorative vessel, the pointed finial does something specific to the surrounding surface: it provides a single vertical accent above the arrangement. Books, trays, and decorative objects are all horizontal. The Apex's pointed finial lid breaks that register.
Pedestal Base — Elevated Form
The Apex's sculptural pedestal base elevates the vessel above the surface , the same architectural intention as the Nero bowls and the Alto and Cima lidded vessels. The difference from the Umbra is immediately visible: where the Umbra rests on the surface and belongs there, the Apex is raised above it and reads from across the room.
The pedestal means the vessel body is at a height that is visible from a standing position and from a seated position at a table. The full form , pedestal, rounded body, pointed finial ,is on display. Nothing is obscured. The polished black marble reads as architectural detail rather than just a decorative object.
On a sideboard, the Apex's elevation places the finial at a height where it is visible above the sideboard line , a dark, pointed architectural presence rising above the furniture. On a console, it provides the vertical element in an arrangement where horizontal items (books, trays, low objects) surround it. On a dining table, it is the centrepiece that remains visible across the table from a seated position.
Black Marble, White Veining — The Apex's Visual Engine
The Apex shares the defining material character of the full Nero/Umbra family: natural white veining on solid black marble, polished to a smooth finish. The polish deepens the black to near-true black and sharpens the white veining to its highest contrast.
At the Apex's elevated height, the veining is visible from a standing position , the sweep of white mineral through the black stone seen from above as the finial catches the eye first, and then again from the side as the vessel body is examined closely. The veining that runs from the vessel base up through the body and into the lid is the same organic mineral pattern , formed over millions of years in the stone, never repeating, never designed, entirely determined by the geological history of that specific piece of marble.
No two Apex vessels carry the same veining. The piece that arrives is the only one of its exact configuration.
Decorative and Functional — The Lidded Form
The Apex's removable lid makes the vessel genuinely functional as well as sculptural. With the lid in place, the Apex is a closed, resolved object ,the interior private, the form complete. Lid removed, the vessel interior becomes accessible for small essentials: jewellery, cufflinks, rings, meaningful small objects stored in a vessel of solid black marble.
This is the same functional quality as the Cella and Cima (ivory onyx lidded vessels), now in black marble with the elevated pedestal form and pointed finial of the Apex. The combination of pedestal height, removable lid, and pointed finial makes the Apex the most architecturally complete piece in the black marble family.
⚠️ Black Marble Care
🖤 Care Note:
- Avoid ALL acidic contact — citrus, vinegar, wine permanently etch polished black marble
- Wipe any liquid immediately with a dry soft cloth — do not allow to dry on the surface
- No abrasive cleaners — scratch the polished finish
- Polished black marble shows fingerprints — wipe regularly with dry microfibre cloth
- Handle the finial lid with care — carved stone; the pointed tip is the most delicate point
- Natural veining, inclusions, and colour shifts are characteristics of the stone, not defects
